Best JDM Area Trout Reels: Daiwa 25 Iprimi vs Shimano 26 Vanquish CE, and Is the New US Iprimi LT the Same Reel?
Area trout (エリアトラウト) is Japan’s name for lure fishing in stocked, pay-to-fish trout ponds. The lures are spoons of 0.5 to 2 g on 2 or 3 lb line, and Japanese makers build spinning reels for exactly that job. Five of them run from ¥19,500 to ¥69,800.
Short version: the Daiwa 25 Iprimi at ¥23,300 is the reel most people should buy, the Shimano 26 Vanquish CE at ¥69,800 is a limited 2026 model for anglers who want the lightest possible handle rotation, and the new US-market Daiwa Iprimi LT at $199.99 matches the JDM Iprimi on gear ratio, weight and drag but not on lineup or listed features.
Prices for JDM products are shown in JPY (tax excluded) with approximate USD conversion at the time of writing (¥157 = $1).
What Makes a Reel an Area Trout Reel?
Four numbers on the spec sheet matter for area trout, and the bearing count isn’t one of them.
- Retrieve per handle turn. Area spoons are wound slowly at a steady speed, so most area models pull in 55 to 69 cm of line per turn. A reel at 81 cm or more is for plugs and for picking up slack fast.
- Weight. Area rods weigh very little, and a reel between 135 and 180 g keeps the outfit balanced in one hand for a whole session.
- Spool depth. You only need 80 to 100 m of 2 to 3 lb line. A shallow spool fills with that amount and no backing. In Japanese model codes, S, SS and SSS mark shallow, extra shallow and the shallowest spool.
- Drag. Maximum drag on these reels is 3 to 5 kg, far above what 3 lb line survives. What you’re paying for is a drag that starts slipping smoothly at a few hundred grams.
If codes like 1000SSS, C2000S and LT2000S-P mean nothing to you yet, our guide to JDM reel size numbering decodes them, and JDM PE line and leader ratings covers how Japanese gou sizes convert to pounds.

On January 9, 2023 I came home from a day of area trout and posted one line: light game is best on light tackle. I still think so, with one condition. Whether you need lightness or strength isn’t decided by the name of the fishing. It’s decided by the size of the fish and the weight of the lure. Half-kilo rainbows on 1 g spoons want the 135 to 150 g reels below and never test their 3 kg drag. Some ponds also stock trout several times that size, and the anglers who go after those fish with 3 g spoons and plugs fish 4 or 5 lb line. For them the Vanquish CE 2500S, with a 47 mm spool and 4 kg of drag, makes more sense than any 1000.

Five JDM Area Trout Reels, Cheapest First
Shimano 25 Ultegra C2000S: ¥19,500, and Not an Area Model
The Ultegra is a general-purpose spinning reel, and Shimano doesn’t sell it as a trout reel. It’s here because the C2000S has the right numbers: a 5.1 gear ratio, 69 cm per turn and a shallow spool. Shimano’s tech list for the 2025 model includes MicroModule Gear II, Infinity Cross and Infinity Drive, which also appear on the Vanquish CE at three and a half times the price.

| Technology | What it does |
|---|---|
| MicroModule Gear II | Finer gear teeth for a smoother, quieter wind |
| Infinity Cross | Wider tooth contact that spreads load across the gear face |
| Infinity Drive | Low-friction main shaft support for lighter winding under load |
| Anti-Twist Fin | A flexible fin beside the line roller that keeps slack line from dropping under the spool |
| Silent Drive | Tighter tolerances between drive parts to remove play and noise |
| X-Protect | Non-contact water-repellent sealing |
| Model | Gear ratio | Retrieve / turn | Weight | Max drag | Bearings | JDM RRP (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| C2000S | 5.1 | 69 cm | 180 g | 3 kg | 5+1 | ¥19,500 (~$124) |
| C2000SHG | 6.0 | 81 cm | 180 g | 3 kg | 5+1 | ¥19,500 (~$124) |
At 180 g it weighs 40 g more than a Vanquish CE 1000SSS, and it’s the heaviest reel in this article. Buy it if area trout is one of several things the reel will do, because the same C2000S is a normal choice for light saltwater work.
Daiwa 25 Iprimi: The ¥23,300 Reel Built for Area Trout
Iprimi (イプリミ) is Daiwa’s entry-priced area trout name, and the 2025 reel is the cheapest one here that was designed for ponds from the start. Body and rotor are ZAION V, Daiwa’s carbon-reinforced resin. The rotor, bail and spool follow Daiwa’s Airdrive Design, which cuts weight from the parts that spin. Daiwa also puts a ball bearing in the line roller, a detail that matters with 2 lb line.
All three models cost the same and differ only in speed. LT1000S at 64 cm per turn is the standard spoon reel. LT2000S-P is the slow one at 63 cm, and LT2000S-XH jumps to 81 cm for plugs and bottom lures.

| Technology | What it does |
|---|---|
| ZAION V body and rotor | Carbon-reinforced resin: light, and stiffer than plain resin |
| Airdrive Design | Lightened rotor, bail and spool for a quicker start and stop of the handle |
| ATD Type-L | Drag tuned to start slipping smoothly at low loads on light line |
| Tough Digigear | Daiwa’s precision-cut drive gear |
| HG-I finesse knob | Small I-shaped handle knob for pinching between two fingers |
| Model | Gear ratio | Retrieve / turn | Weight | Max drag | Bearings | Line capacity | JDM RRP (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LT1000S | 5.2 | 64 cm | 170 g | 5 kg | 8+1 | 2.5 lb-100 m | ¥23,300 (~$148) |
| LT2000S-P | 4.8 | 63 cm | 175 g | 5 kg | 8+1 | 3 lb-150 m | ¥23,300 (~$148) |
| LT2000S-XH | 6.2 | 81 cm | 175 g | 5 kg | 8+1 | 3 lb-150 m | ¥23,300 (~$148) |
Where does the money go if you spend more? Mostly into weight. The Iprimi is 25 to 35 g heavier than the three reels above it, and Daiwa’s tech list for it has no Monocoque body, the one-piece frame used on the Luvias ST and Presso. Daiwa marks the Iprimi as usable in saltwater, which the Presso is not.
Is the US Iprimi LT the Same Reel as the JDM 25 Iprimi?
Daiwa US lists a “2026 Iprimi LT” at an MSRP of $199.99 and describes it as a spinning reel designed around trout fishing. Neither Daiwa US nor Daiwa Japan says the two are the same product, so the comparison here stops at the published figures.

Gear ratio, retrieve, weight and drag agree once ounces and inches are converted. Three things differ on paper: the lineup, how line capacity is rated, and the feature lists.
- Lineup. The US range is two reels, 1000S and 2000S-XH. Japan has a third, the low-geared LT2000S-P at 63 cm per turn, and it has no US counterpart.
- Line capacity. The two sites rate the spools with different lines and units, so the capacity figures can’t be compared directly. Daiwa US doesn’t publish a spool depth.
| Feature as listed | Daiwa US: Iprimi LT | Daiwa Japan: 25 Iprimi |
|---|---|---|
| ZAION V body | Listed | Listed (body and rotor) |
| Lightened rotor, bail, spool | Air Rotor, Air Bail, Air Spool | Airdrive rotor, bail, spool |
| Tough Digigear | Listed | Listed |
| Spool lip | ABS Longcast | Not listed |
| Drag type | Not listed | ATD Type-L |
So which do you buy? In the US, the Iprimi LT comes from a domestic dealer with Daiwa US behind it. The JDM reel lists for about $50 less before shipping and import costs, and it’s the only way to get the 2000S-P. If the slow 2000 isn’t the one you want, the list-price gap is small enough that buying locally is reasonable. Above ¥45,000: Three Reels at 150 g or Less

Daiwa 24 Luvias ST: 135 g, the Lightest Reel Here
ST stands for Sensitive Tune. Daiwa took the 2024 Luvias, swapped its grease-packed bearings for oiled ones and removed the Magseal, the magnetic-oil seal that keeps water out of the standard Luvias. The handle turns with less resistance, and the reel gives up some protection against water to get it. Daiwa recommends the two slow SF models for steady spoon retrieves in area trout.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ST SF1000S-P | 4.6 | 57 cm | 135 g | 3 kg | 8+1 | 2.5 lb-100 m | ¥46,700 (~$297) |
| ST SF2000SS-P | 4.6 | 60 cm | 135 g | 3 kg | 8+1 | 2.5 lb-100 m | ¥46,700 (~$297) |
| ST SF2000SS-H | 5.7 | 74 cm | 135 g | 3 kg | 8+1 | 2.5 lb-100 m | ¥46,700 (~$297) |
| ST LT2000S-P | 4.9 | 64 cm | 145 g | 5 kg | 9+1 | 3 lb-150 m | ¥46,700 (~$297) |
The three SF models are 135 g each, 5 g under the Vanquish CE 1000SSS for ¥23,100 less. The slowest, SF1000S-P at 57 cm per turn, suits the smallest spoons wound at a crawl.
| Technology | What it does |
|---|---|
| Sensitive Tune | Oiled bearings in place of grease and no Magseal, for lower winding resistance |
| Monocoque body | One-piece frame with a screw-in side plate; holds the gear rigidly |
| ZAION | Daiwa’s high-grade carbon resin, used for body and rotor |
| Airdrive Design | Lightened rotor, bail and spool (the LT models also get the Airdrive shaft) |
| ATD Type-L | Low-load drag tuning for light line |
| LC-ABS | Long-cast spool lip shape |
Daiwa 21 Presso: The Dedicated Area Flagship, Freshwater Only
Presso (プレッソ) is Daiwa’s top area trout name, and this 2021 reel is still in Daiwa’s catalogue. There are two models, both geared 4.9 and both spooled for 100 m of 2.5 lb nylon. Each has 12 ball bearings, and the ones supporting the gears run in oil instead of grease. Daiwa labels the reel freshwater only, the only one of the five with that restriction.
| Model | Gear ratio | Retrieve / turn | Weight | Max drag | Bearings | Line capacity | JDM RRP (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| LT1000S-P | 4.9 | 61 cm | 145 g | 5 kg | 12+1 | 2.5 lb-100 m | ¥54,200 (~$345) |
| LT2000SS-P | 4.9 | 64 cm | 150 g | 5 kg | 12+1 | 2.5 lb-100 m | ¥54,200 (~$345) |

| Technology | What it does |
|---|---|
| Monocoque body | One-piece ZAION frame that leaves room for a larger drive gear |
| Tough Digigear | Machine-cut drive gear in extra super duralumin |
| ATD | Daiwa’s drag that follows a running fish without sticking at the start |
| LC-ABS | Thin-walled long-cast spool |
| Oiled ball bearings | The gear-support bearings run in oil instead of grease for a lighter wind |
It’s four years older than the Iprimi and doesn’t have Airdrive Design. Against the Luvias ST it costs ¥7,500 more and weighs 10 g more in the 1000 size. What you get for that is a 5 kg drag where the Luvias ST SF has 3 kg, 12 bearings to 8, and a reel Daiwa sells for area trout and nothing else. The US has no Presso reel. Daiwa US uses the Presso name on rods.
Shimano 26 Vanquish CE: ¥69,800, Limited to 2026
CE is Competition Edition. Shimano describes it as a 2026-only model based on the 23 Vanquish and aimed at area trout and bass tournament anglers. The engineering change is unusual: Shimano removed the waterproof seal on the handle shaft and switched some bearings from grease to oil. By its own measurement that cuts handle torque by about 25% at one turn per three seconds, and by about 40% at the fast winding speed used to bring a lure back in. Both figures are against the 23 Vanquish.

Shimano says outright that waterproofing is a step below the 23 Vanquish. It rates the CE for fresh and salt water, and for salt it names breakwater light game and squid fishing, where the reel isn’t taking spray. This is the wrong Vanquish for a boat.
| Model | Gear ratio | Retrieve / turn | Weight | Max drag | Bearings | Line capacity | JDM RRP (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1000SSS | 5.1 | 64 cm | 140 g | 3 kg | 11+1 | 2 lb-100 m | ¥69,800 (~$445) |
| 1000SSSPG | 4.4 | 55 cm | 140 g | 3 kg | 11+1 | 2 lb-100 m | ¥69,800 (~$445) |
| C2000S | 5.1 | 69 cm | 145 g | 3 kg | 11+1 | 3 lb-125 m | ¥69,800 (~$445) |
| C2000SHG | 6.0 | 81 cm | 145 g | 3 kg | 11+1 | 3 lb-125 m | ¥69,800 (~$445) |
The 1000SSS is new with this edition and is the model Shimano aims at area tournament anglers: 64 cm per turn, 140 g. The 1000SSSPG is the slowest reel in this article at 55 cm.
| Technology | What it does |
|---|---|
| Magnumlite rotor | Asymmetric CI4+ carbon rotor with low inertia, so the handle starts and stops with little force |
| Magnesium HAGANE body | Metal frame that resists flex |
| Infinity Loop | Very slow spool oscillation that lays line in tight, even wraps |
| Infinity Cross / Infinity Drive | Wider gear tooth contact and a low-friction main shaft |
| Duracross | Drag washer material Shimano rates at over ten times the wear resistance of its earlier washers |
| CI4+ handle | Carbon handle that takes weight off the reel |

| Shimano 25 Ultegra | C2000S | 180 g | 5.1 | 69 cm | 3 kg | ¥19,500 (~$124) |
| Daiwa 25 Iprimi | LT1000S | 170 g | 5.2 | 64 cm | 5 kg | ¥23,300 (~$148) |
| Daiwa Iprimi LT (US) | 1000S | 6.0 oz (170 g) | 5.2 | 25.5 in | 11 lb | $199.99 |
| Daiwa 24 Luvias ST | SF1000S-P | 135 g | 4.6 | 57 cm | 3 kg | ¥46,700 (~$297) |
| Daiwa 21 Presso | LT1000S-P | 145 g | 4.9 | 61 cm | 5 kg | ¥54,200 (~$345) |
| Shimano 26 Vanquish CE | 1000SSS | 140 g | 5.1 | 64 cm | 3 kg | ¥69,800 (~$445) |
From the Iprimi to the Luvias ST, ¥23,400 buys a drop of 35 g. From the Luvias ST to the Vanquish CE, another ¥23,100 buys no weight at all. That last step pays for a magnesium body, 11 bearings and the low-torque handle.
Pick by Budget
| Budget | Reel | Why this one |
|---|---|---|
| Under $150 | Daiwa 25 Iprimi LT1000S ¥23,300 (~$148) | Built for ponds, 64 cm per turn, shallow spool. The Ultegra C2000S is ¥3,800 cheaper and 10 g heavier, and only wins if the reel has to do other jobs. |
| $200, bought in the US | Daiwa Iprimi LT 1000S $199.99 | Same published gear ratio, weight and drag as the JDM LT1000S, sold through US dealers. |
| Around $300 | Daiwa 24 Luvias ST SF2000SS-P ¥46,700 (~$297) | 135 g and 60 cm per turn. The lightest reel in the article at two thirds of the Vanquish CE price. |
| No limit | Shimano 26 Vanquish CE 1000SSS ¥69,800 (~$445) | About 25% less handle torque than the 23 Vanquish by Shimano’s own figures, and a one-year model. |

Which Reel for Which Angler?
Start with where you’ll fish it. For stocked ponds and small lakes with 1 to 2 g spoons, buy the Iprimi: the JDM LT1000S if you’re comfortable importing, the US Iprimi LT if you want a local dealer. If you already own a reel at that level and want something you’ll feel on the first cast, the Luvias ST SF is the upgrade, because 35 g less in the hand is obvious and a few more bearings isn’t.
The Presso is for the angler who fishes ponds and nothing else and wants a 5 kg drag on a 145 g reel. The Vanquish CE is for someone who has fished a standard Vanquish and wants the handle lighter than that. Shimano only makes it this year.
One more use for these reels is saltwater light game: horse mackerel and rockfish on 1 g jig heads use the same sizes and the same slow retrieves. The Iprimi, Luvias ST and Ultegra are sold for salt as well, the Presso isn’t, and the Vanquish CE comes with Shimano’s caveat about spray. Reels built for that job are in our guide to JDM ajing and LRF rods and reels.
Daiwa US uses the Presso name on rods, and those aren’t the Japanese area rods either; our JDM area trout rod comparison sets the US and JDM Presso lines side by side.
