Best JDM Fluorocarbon Shock Leaders: Japanese Leader Lines by Gou, Pounds and Price
Order a 30 lb Japanese fluorocarbon leader and you’ll get 8号 from five of the six big makers. Order 70 lb and you might get 20号 or 22号, a full size apart, depending on whose spool it is. Japanese leader is sold by gou (号), a diameter number, with pounds printed next to it, and the two numbers stop agreeing between brands once you’re past 20 lb.
The spools differ too. One brand gives you 50 meters, another 30, and one drops to 15 meters in exactly the sizes offshore anglers use. Only two of the six print a list price at all. So the useful questions for a US buyer are simple ones: what size am I really getting, how many leaders are on the spool, and what does a meter of it cost?

The Short Answer: Shimano’s 50 m Spool, Then Daiwa for the Sizes It Skips
For light jigging and slow pitch, buy the Shimano Ocea Jigger Master Fluoro Leader. It comes on a 50 m spool in seven sizes from 16 to 60 lb, and at Shimano’s own list prices it’s the cheaper per meter of the two leaders here that publish a price: ¥66 a meter at 20 lb against ¥87 for Daiwa’s 30 m spool. Shimano built it as a jigging leader and says so on the product page.
It has two holes. There’s nothing under 16 lb, so the 3号 (12 lb) leader that most tairaba (鯛ラバ, the Japanese sliding-head lure method for red sea bream) boats ask for isn’t in the range, and nothing over 60 lb. For those, the Daiwa Saltiga Fluoro Leader X’Link runs 8 to 100 lb in thirteen sizes with a list price on every one.
Sunline’s Saltimate System Shock Leader FC is the other long spool, 50 m up to 50 lb at open price. Our light jigging line and assist hook guide covers it in detail.

Gou to Pounds: Six Japanese Leaders, Size by Size
A dash means that maker doesn’t sell that size in that leader. The diameter column is the standard nylon and fluorocarbon table that Sunline publishes; 15号 and 25号 aren’t on it.

Up to 5号 the six agree to the pound: 3号 is 12 lb, 4号 is 16 lb, 5号 is 20 lb. That covers tairaba and the light end of jigging, so at 20 lb and under you can order by pounds and get the same thickness from anyone.
At 25 lb it comes apart. Shimano and YGK call 6号 a 25 lb line. Daiwa, Seaguar and Sunline don’t make a 6号 in these leaders and put 25 lb on 7号, which is 0.03 mm thicker on the standard table. Varivas makes both and rates 6号 at 22 lb. YGK’s 7号 and 8号 carry 28 and 32 lb where everyone else prints 25 and 30.
The heavy end is where it costs you. Daiwa’s 70 lb X’Link is 22号, and 22号 from Sunline or Varivas is an 80 lb leader. Daiwa’s 100 lb is 35号 against 30号 from the other two, and its 50 lb sits on 15号 where the rest use 14号. If you’re tying a PR knot or threading a small jig eye, check the gou before you check the pounds. The background on why Japanese line is numbered this way is in our JDM PE line and leader ratings guide.

Shimano Ocea Jigger Master Fluoro Leader: 50 Meters, Seven Jigging Sizes
Shimano’s pitch for this one is fighting big fish on thin line, and the build follows from that. The fluorocarbon is a grade Shimano calls Master Fluoro, described as ultra-high molecular weight, in a two-layer construction: a softer outer layer so knots seat with consistent strength, and a harder core that Shimano says holds its ground during the fight. Against the older Ocea leader, Shimano claims more suppleness and more shock absorption, plus less curl and twist over a long day.

Key Technologies
| Feature | What Shimano says it does |
|---|---|
| Master Fluoro | Ultra-high molecular weight fluorocarbon chosen for strength |
| Two-layer construction | Soft outer layer for stable knot strength; hard core that resists during the fight |
| Suppleness and shock absorption | Both raised over the previous Ocea leader |
| Low memory | Curl and twist are slow to set in, for long sessions |
Key Specs
| Size (号) | Avg. strength | Spool | JDM RRP (excl. tax) | ≈ USD | Yen per meter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | 16 lb / 7.3 kg | 50 m | ¥3,300 | $21 | ¥66 |
| 5 | 20 lb / 9.1 kg | 50 m | ¥3,300 | $21 | ¥66 |
| 6 | 25 lb / 11.3 kg | 50 m | ¥3,650 | $23 | ¥73 |
| 8 | 30 lb / 13.6 kg | 50 m | ¥3,650 | $23 | ¥73 |
| 12 | 40 lb / 18.1 kg | 50 m | ¥3,800 | $24 | ¥76 |
| 14 | 50 lb / 22.7 kg | 50 m | ¥3,900 | $25 | ¥78 |
| 18 | 60 lb / 27.2 kg | 50 m | ¥4,200 | $27 | ¥84 |
Seven sizes is a short list, and the gaps are real: no 7号, no 10号. A 25 lb leader here is 6号, a size thinner than the 25 lb from Daiwa or Sunline. If your braid is PE 1.2 to 1.5, the 25 and 30 lb spools are the two to own, and 50 m is sixteen leaders at 3 m each. For matching the braid above it, see our JDM PE lines for offshore fishing.
Daiwa Saltiga Fluoro Leader X’Link: 8 to 100 lb With a Price on Every Size
Daiwa calls this its strongest fluorocarbon to date and names three things behind that claim: a resin blend of its own, cross-linking between the molecules, and a process that evens the molecules out at the nano level. The practical promises are higher knot strength, curl that pulls out easily, and a line with no stiffness to it, which Daiwa says makes it usable as a long leader.

Every spool is 30 m, parallel wound, with a colored band: pink on the 40 lb, green on the 50 lb, so you can tell them apart in a wet tackle bag. The range is the reason to buy it. It’s the only leader here with a list price that also covers 8, 10 and 12 lb, which is tairaba and light-game territory, and it keeps going to 100 lb.
Key Technologies
| Technology | What Daiwa says it does |
|---|---|
| Tough Resin | A resin material from Daiwa’s own blend, the base of the line’s strength |
| X’Link | Cross-linked structure between molecules, raising strength |
| Nano Control | Molecules made uniform at the nano level; higher knot strength, curl that comes out easily, more sensitivity |
| DPLS parallel winding | Wound flat so the line isn’t deformed on the spool |
| Dedicated spool band | Band color changes from one size to the next; holds the line without loading it |
Key Specs
| Strength (lb) | Reference 号 | Spool | JDM RRP (excl. tax) | ≈ USD | Yen per meter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 / 10 / 12 | 2 / 2.5 / 3 | 30 m | ¥2,300 | $15 | ¥77 |
| 16 / 20 | 4 / 5 | 30 m | ¥2,600 | $17 | ¥87 |
| 25 / 30 | 7 / 8 | 30 m | ¥2,600 | $17 | ¥87 |
| 40 / 50 | 12 / 15 | 30 m | ¥2,800 | $18 | ¥93 |
| 60 / 70 | 18 / 22 | 30 m | ¥3,300 | $21 | ¥110 |
| 80 / 100 | 25 / 35 | 30 m | ¥4,200 | $27 | ¥140 |
Per meter it costs more than the Shimano in every size the two share, by ¥14 to ¥26. The gou runs thick at the top: 22号 for 70 lb and 35号 for 100 lb, so don’t assume it will pass through the same guides or jig eyes as another brand’s 70. Daiwa also sells a plain Fluoro Shock Leader X from 3 to 40 lb at open price, on 30 m spools up to 12 lb and 20 m from 14 lb.
YGK X-Braid FC Absorber Tight Knot: More Pounds at 7号 and 8号
YGK built this one around the knot. The company says a special process gives it high knot strength together with flexibility, so that FG and PR knots and the knot at the lure seat consistently and lose less strength. It also claims little spool curl or kinking, a refractive index of 1.42 (close to water), and water absorption under 0.1%. Specific gravity is 1.78.

| Water absorption under 0.1% | Keeps its quality over time |

Read the lb column against the big table and two sizes stick out. YGK prints 28 lb on 7号 and 32 lb on 8号, three and two pounds over what the others print at the same gou. It also sells a true 6号 at 25 lb. YGK doesn’t publish a price, so what you pay depends on the shop.
Varivas and Seaguar: Open-Price Spools That Fill the Gaps
Two leaders with no list price, and they suit opposite ends of the tackle bag.
The Varivas Shock Leader [Fluorocarbon] has the widest range of the six: fifteen sizes from 10 lb (2.5号) to 130 lb (40号), all on 30 m. Like YGK it makes both a 6号 and a 7号, and it’s the only one that goes past 100 lb. Varivas credits a coating it calls Non-Stress Coating for resistance to teeth, fins and structure.

Kureha calls itself the pioneer of fluorocarbon line, and the Seaguar Fluoro Shock Leader is the spool it tags as the value option, pitched at sea bass and salt lure fishing in general. It runs 8 to 50 lb and includes a 3.5号 at 14 lb that nobody else here makes. Kureha says the line is supple enough to knot smoothly to PE, and the spools are thin, clip together, and come with a band.

| Spool | Sizes on it (lb / 号) |
|---|---|
| 30 m | 8 / 2, 10 / 2.5, 12 / 3 |
| 20 m | 14 / 3.5, 16 / 4, 20 / 5 |
| 15 m | 25 / 7, 30 / 8, 35 / 10, 40 / 12, 50 / 14 |
From 25 lb up you get 15 m, which is five leaders at 3 m each. For tairaba at 12 lb the 30 m spool is fine. For jigging at 30 lb, you’d need more than three Seaguar spools to match one of Shimano’s.
What to Look For on a Japanese Leader Spool
- Meters, before price. These six come in 15, 20, 30 and 50 m, and Seaguar and Sunline change length partway up the range. Sunline’s System Shock Leader FC is 50 m to 50 lb and 30 m from 60 lb. Divide the price by the meters.
- What the pounds mean. Shimano’s figure is an average. Kureha calls Seaguar’s a standard strength. Daiwa, YGK, Varivas and Sunline give a number with no definition in the spec table. A 2 lb gap between brands is inside that uncertainty.
- The gou your braid wants. In Japan the leader is picked to suit the PE size, and 3号 fluorocarbon behind PE 0.8 is the standard tairaba pairing. Our tairaba line and leader setup goes through when to move to 4号.
- Published price or open price. Shimano and Daiwa print one. YGK, Varivas, Seaguar and Sunline are open price, so the only number you’ll see is the shop’s.

FAQ
What gou is a 30 lb Japanese fluorocarbon leader?
8号, from Shimano, Daiwa, Varivas, Seaguar and Sunline. YGK’s FC Absorber Tight Knot rates its 8号 at 32 lb, and its nearest size under that is 7号 at 28 lb.
Can I just order by pounds?
At 20 lb and under, yes: 12, 16 and 20 lb are 3号, 4号 and 5号 across all six. Above that, read the gou. A 25 lb leader is 6号 from Shimano and YGK and 7号 from Daiwa, Seaguar and Sunline, and at 70 lb Daiwa is 22号 where Sunline and Varivas are 20号.
How many leaders are on one spool?
At 3 m per leader, a 15 m spool ties five, a 30 m spool ten and a 50 m spool sixteen. Leader gets cut back every time it’s scuffed, so on a reef day the 15 m spools go fast.
Why do some of these have no price?
YGK, Varivas, Kureha and Sunline list them as open price, meaning the maker sets no retail figure and each shop does. Shimano and Daiwa publish one before tax for every size.
Which Leader to Buy for Your Fishing
For jigging between 16 and 60 lb, the Shimano Ocea Jigger Master Fluoro Leader gives you the most line for the list price and a build aimed at exactly that fishing. For tairaba at 12 lb, or anything over 60 lb, go to the Daiwa Saltiga X’Link and check the gou at the heavy end. If you need a size neither makes, such as 10号 or anything over 100 lb, the Varivas range has it. New to light jigging altogether? Our light jigging line, leader and assist hook guide covers the whole terminal end in one place.
