Daiwa Saltiga vs Outrage vs Outrage BR vs Outrage XV: Which of the 4 JDM Jigging Rod Tiers Is Worth Importing?
Daiwa Japan sells its boat jigging rods on four rungs: Saltiga at the top, then Outrage, Outrage BR and Outrage XV. Each rung repeats the same families, LJ for light jigging, SLJ for super light jigging and J for standard jigging, so you choose twice: a family, then a price. Across those three families the four tiers hold 87 models.
Take one rod that exists on all four, the 6’3″ extra heavy baitcaster. Saltiga LJ 63XHB-S: ¥53,000, 140 g, jigs from 60 to 160 g. Outrage LJ 63XHB-S: ¥40,300, 138 g, 60 to 160 g. Outrage BR LJ 63XHB: ¥28,800, 138 g, 60 to 150 g. Outrage XV LJ 63XHB: ¥18,000, 140 g, 60 to 160 g. The ¥35,000 between top and bottom buys no extra jig rating and no weight saving on that model. It buys guides, blank material, tip construction and the number of pieces the rod arrives in.
If you’re importing, the piece count matters as much as the price. Every Saltiga LJ, SLJ and J is a single piece, 178 to 193 cm long in the tube. Outrage BR and XV models break down to as little as 100 cm. These are Japanese-market model codes, sold through Amazon Japan. What to Look for: The Family Letters First, the Tier Second
The letters after the series name set the jig weight. The tier doesn’t.
| Letters | Stands for | Rated lure weight | PE line | Sold in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SLJ | Super light jigging | 10 to 100 g (Saltiga: 10 to 80 g) | 0.4 to 1.0 | All four tiers |
| LJ | Light jigging | 30 to 200 g | 0.6 to 2.0 | All four tiers |
| J | Jigging | Max 160 to 260 g (Saltiga: Max 220 to 350 g) | Max 2.5 to 5 | All four tiers |
| SJ | Slow jigging (slow pitch) | 80 to 800 g, by power number | Max 1.2 to 4 | All four tiers |
| LC | Light casting | Max 50 to 55 g | Max 2 to 2.5 | Saltiga, Outrage, Outrage BR |
| C | Casting | Max 50 to 160 g (Outrage C) | Max 2 to 8 | Outrage, Outrage BR, Outrage XV |
SJ runs on its own 00 to 6 power scale, and the Saltiga SJ and Outrage SJ are broken down model by model in our slow pitch jigging rod comparison.
The digits and letters after the family name follow the usual Japanese pattern, which how to read Japanese rod specs covers. Three suffixes are Daiwa’s own: -S is a solid carbon tip, TG (Thrill Game) is a blank built on a solid core, which Daiwa calls full solid on the Saltiga, and SMT and MT are titanium alloy tips.
- Jig weight you really fish. SLJ stops at 100 g. LJ covers 30 to 200 g. J is rated by a ceiling, 160 to 350 g. If your jigs stay under 150 g in less than 100 m of water, LJ is the family, and the rest of that setup is in the light jigging guide.
- Closed length (仕舞寸法, shimai sunpo). It’s the longest piece once the rod is taken apart, and it’s the size of your parcel. A one-piece 6’4″ rod is a 193 cm parcel. Carriers charge on volume as well as weight; the guide to buying JDM tackle from overseas goes through it.
- Spinning or baitcast. Most families offer both, marked S or B in the code. The Saltiga J HIGHRESPONSE is spinning only.
- Carbon content. Daiwa prints it for every model. XV rods sit at 79 to 85%, BR at 85 to 92%, and the top two tiers reach 97 to 99% on models such as the Outrage LJ TG and the Saltiga SLJ.
Daiwa Saltiga: One-Piece Blanks and Carbon Guide Frames, From ¥51,000

Saltiga is the name Daiwa puts on its top offshore gear, and in these three families it means 25 models between ¥51,000 (~$324) and ¥59,000 (~$375). None of them comes apart. Daiwa’s page for the SLJ calls the one-piece build a choice made for sensitivity and strength.
Guides are where the LJ and the J pull away from everything below them. Both carry AGS (Air Guide System), a carbon guide frame that Daiwa says is about three times as rigid as titanium. On the J LOWRESPONSE the AGS guides sit on the tip section, and Daiwa says the butt guides are metal on purpose. The SLJ gets a different flagship part: SMT, a titanium alloy tip, on five of its seven models. The SLJ is also where the top tier shows up on a scale: 73 to 97 g, against 90 to 120 g for the Outrage SLJ.
The Saltiga SLJ’s jig windows are narrower than the cheaper tiers’. Its ML models are rated 15 to 60 g and its M models 20 to 80 g. Outrage, BR and XV all print 15 to 80 g and 20 to 100 g against the same letters.

Key Technologies
| Technology | What it is | Where it’s fitted |
|---|---|---|
| AGS (Air Guide System) | Carbon-frame guides. Lighter than metal frames, which matters most at the tip | Every LJ model; tip section on the J LOWRESPONSE. Not on the SLJ list |
| SMT (Super Metal Top) | A super-elastic titanium alloy tip that amplifies vibration and shrugs off knocks | SLJ models ending in -SMT |
| Mega Top | Solid carbon with fiber and resin evenly dispersed, so it bends the same in every direction | LJ solid tips (-S) and the full solid TG blanks in LJ and SLJ |
| X45 Full Shield | A 45-degree bias wrap moved to the outside of the blank and started at the tip, where Daiwa says twist begins | LJ and J LOWRESPONSE. The SLJ lists standard X45 |
| HVF Nanoplus | Carbon sheet with less resin and denser fiber, combined with Toray’s Nanoalloy resin technology | All three families |
| Reel seats | Air Sensor Seat (carbon-reinforced) on spinning LJ and SLJ models; ZERO_SEAT on the J | By family |

Should you buy it?
The SLJ makes the clearest case, because the difference is measurable: lighter rods, a titanium tip, and a 0.5 mm tip on the lightest model. The LJ makes the weakest one. Daiwa built the Outrage LJ on the Saltiga LJ’s action and sells seven of the same ten model codes there, so what the extra money buys in LJ is AGS, the Full Shield wrap and a blank without a joint. That’s worth paying for if you can feel it and if the parcel doesn’t put you off.
Daiwa Outrage: Saltiga-Derived Actions From ¥40,300, With a Butt Joint on LJ and SLJ
Seven Outrage LJ codes also exist as Saltiga LJ: 63XHB-S, 63XXHB, 62HB TG, 62XHB TG, 62XXHB TG, 63XHS-S and 62XXHS TG. Jig and PE ratings match on every one of them, and Daiwa says outright that the Outrage LJ follows the Saltiga LJ’s action. On a shared code the Outrage costs ¥12,700 to ¥13,200 less.

What goes missing is AGS and the Full Shield version of X45. What changes physically is the joint. Outrage LJ and SLJ rods split just above the grip, a butt joint (バットジョイント), which Daiwa says stiffens the section from butt to reel seat. Closed length on the LJ drops from 185 to 191 cm down to 139 to 145 cm. The SLJ closes to between 142 and 169 cm.
The Outrage J has no joint at all: seven one-piece rods, 183 to 191 cm. So the J saves you money against the Saltiga J and nothing on freight. Its jig ceilings are lower too. At PE 3 the Outrage J stops at 180 g and the Saltiga J LOWRESPONSE at 250 g.

| Mega Top | Solid tips on -S models and the solid core of TG models |
| Air Sensor Seat | Spinning models only. Baitcast J models use a TCS trigger seat |
| Guides | No AGS anywhere in the tier |
The verdict
For LJ and SLJ this tier gives up the least. You keep the Saltiga actions, the TG option and a titanium tip, and you get a rod that ships about 45 cm shorter. For J the sums are different, because the Outrage J is rated for lighter jigs and is as long in the tube as a Saltiga.
Daiwa Outrage BR: Two-Piece Blanks Down to 100 cm, All Under ¥30,000
The BR LJ is the full model change of the old Blast LJ, and all 24 BR models here sit between ¥27,900 (~$177) and ¥29,400 (~$187). The blank is HVF carbon wrapped with X45. The Nanoplus resin of the two tiers above is gone, and so are the TG and titanium tip models.
Daiwa sells the BR LJ two ways. Six models are butt-jointed and close to 142 or 145 cm, like the Outrage. Four more carry a -2 suffix, are cut at the center and close to 100 cm, with a V-Joint (bias carbon in the ferrule) and a joint Daiwa says resists turning during use. Same price, same jig rating, and 2 to 4 g heavier than the butt-joint version.

The BR J closes to between 127 and 132 cm, which makes it the highest rung on which a J rod comes apart. Jig ceilings match the Outrage J exactly: 160, 180, 220 and 260 g.
On the BR LJ the Mega Top tip is on the -S models only and the Air Sensor Seat on spinning models only. One more thing to read before ordering: the BR LJ’s XH models are rated 60 to 150 g, 10 g under the other three tiers, and its H models start at 30 g where the others start at 40 g.

Anyone whose rod has to travel. The -2 models close 42 to 45 cm shorter than the butt-joint ones and cost nothing extra. The BR J keeps the 2.5 power, rated to 160 g, which the XV J doesn’t offer.
Daiwa Outrage XV: ¥18,000 Flat, and the Tier Daiwa Calls Global
Sixteen models, one price: ¥18,000 (~$114) before tax, whatever the family or power. Daiwa Japan describes XV as its global offshore rod series, built on the Outrage actions with specs meant to hold up on fisheries around the world.

The technology list has a single entry. Braiding X is carbon tape wound in an X over the outermost layer of the butt section to resist twist. There’s no X45, no named HVF material, no Mega Top and no Air Sensor Seat on Daiwa’s page. There are no TG, SMT or MT models at this tier, though all five SLJ models carry the -S suffix.
The ratings that decide whether a rod suits your water are the Outrage’s. XV LJ prints 40 to 120 g, 60 to 160 g and 80 to 200 g across H, XH and XXH. XV J prints 180, 220 and 260 g at powers 3, 4 and 5. Closed lengths are 100 cm on the SLJ, 145 cm on the LJ and 128 to 130 cm on the J, and each rod comes with a cloth rod cover.

Global Alternative
Daiwa’s US site lists an Outrage XV range of its own: seven jigging rods, four light jigging, four slow pitch and one 7’9″ popping rod, with Braiding X and Fuji K guides. It also lists a US Outrage range on HVF Nanoplus and X45, and a Saltiga Light Jigging rod with Mega Top and X45. Daiwa US shows an MSRP of $249.99 for the Outrage XV, from $299.99 for the Outrage and $499.99 for the Saltiga Light Jigging. The US model codes aren’t the Japanese ones, so those are different rods with their own spec sheet, and neither the figures in these tables nor the yen prices carry across. Neither US range has an SLJ family, which leaves the Japanese rods as the way to get one.

Pick by Budget: Three Rods at 4, 3 and 7
About $114: Outrage XV LJ 63XHB
¥18,000 (~$114). Jigs from 60 to 160 g on PE 0.8 to 1.5, 140 g, 145 cm closed. The jig window is the one printed on the Saltiga LJ and Outrage LJ at the same power. What you don’t get is any of the named blank materials.
About $183, and the easiest to ship: Outrage BR LJ 63XHB-2
¥28,800 (~$183). Center-cut two-piece that closes to 100 cm, with a V-Joint in the ferrule, HVF carbon and X45. Rated 60 to 150 g on PE 0.6 to 1.5 at 140 g.
About $267: Outrage LJ 62XHB TG
¥42,000 (~$267). A Thrill Game blank on a solid Mega Top core, with the same code as the Saltiga LJ, 60 to 160 g, 135 g, 97% carbon, 142 cm closed. The Saltiga version of this code is ¥55,000 and 188 cm in the tube.
Which One Should You Choose?
Start from the parcel, not the logo. If a 190 cm tube is a problem where you live, Saltiga and the Outrage J are out before price comes into it. That leaves Outrage LJ and SLJ at 139 to 169 cm, or BR and XV at 100 to 145 cm.
If freight isn’t the constraint, the answer changes by family. In SLJ the Saltiga is lighter and has the titanium tip on most models. In LJ the Outrage shares the Saltiga’s codes and ratings for about ¥13,000 less, minus the carbon guides. In J the Saltiga is rated for a heavier jig at every PE class than any of the three Outrage tiers, so there the gap is in the rating, not the fittings.
On a tight budget, the XV prints the Outrage’s jig ratings at ¥18,000 and leaves out the named materials. Daiwa isn’t the only Japanese maker with a tiered light jigging line either: the Yamaga Blanks and Tenryu rods are in best JDM light jigging rods.
Daiwa’s casting rods are only one option for tuna; the Japanese specialists are compared in our guide to Japanese tuna popping rods.
