Shimano Nessa Explained: Five JDM Surf Rod Tiers for Australian Beaches
Shimano Japan sells five surf rods under the Nessa (ネッサ) name, and between them they cover ¥27,200 to ¥110,000. Every one of the 25 models is a three-piece spinning rod from 9’9″ to 11’6″. When we went through the JDM page of Shimano Australia’s rod range in October 2026, it listed 22 rods and no Nessa at all, so whichever tier you settle on, it comes from Japan.
In Japan these are the rods for what anglers there call surf game: minnows, sinking pencils, soft plastics and metals cast off open sand for hirame (ヒラメ, olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus) and magochi (マゴチ). Magochi is a flathead, same family as ours, so the job description lines up with dusky flathead (Platycephalus fuscus) sitting in a beach gutter. The same blanks throw metals at the Australian salmon (Arripis trutta) and tailor (Pomatomus saltatrix) that work those beaches.
For flathead and salmon on plugs and metals of 40 g or less, the lighter half of each tier is where the useful models sit, and the heavier MH and MH+ rods matter less. Daiwa’s rival family has its own page: our Daiwa Overthere explainer goes through the EX, SX and standard models. Reading a Nessa Spec Sheet Before You Order
- Look at the bottom of the plug rating first. On a flathead beach the light lures decide the rod. Every SS and the three M and M+ BBs are rated down to 8 g. The lightest Limited and XTUNE start at 10 g and the rest at 12 g. No XR goes below 12 g.
- The letters are butt power. M, M+, MH and MH+ climb in that order. A slash code such as M/MH means an M tip on an MH butt, and every slash model in the range comes with Soft Tube Top, Shimano’s tubular tip built to bend like a solid one. The Limited and BB have no slash models.
- The year is part of the name. The current rods date from 2022 for the BB, 2023 for the Limited, 2024 for the SS and 2025 for the XTUNE, and the XR was released in August 2026. Model codes carry over between generations, and some Australian import shops still list a 2020 XTUNE, so check the year before paying.
- PE ratings barely move. Every Nessa is rated for PE 0.8 to 2 except the MH+ models, which go to PE 1 to 2.5. PE sizes are in gō (号), and PE 1 is the size Shimano pairs with its lightest BB.
- Shimano suggests reel sizes on some pages. On the Limited and XTUNE, the M models are paired with C3000 to 4000 reels, the M+ and MH models with 4000 to C5000, and the MH+ with 4000 to 5000. The BB page goes further and gives a reel, braid and leader for each model. The XR and SS pages don’t list reels.
Nessa Limited and XTUNE: The Two Tiers With Titanium Guides
The top two tiers are the only ones Shimano lists with titanium guides from the tip to the butt. The XR gets the same titanium butt guide, but its page doesn’t say what the other guides are made of. They’re also where the money goes fastest: the dearer Limited and the XTUNE are ¥31,000 apart on their 10’10” M+ models, and the cheaper XR has one of those too.

Shimano Nessa Limited
Shimano calls the Limited the peak of its surf rods, and the parts list is where you see it. It is the only Nessa built with Shimano X Guides from tip to butt: 3D titanium guides packed close together at the tip to stop braid wrapping, Aero titanium guides through the middle to cut drag on the cast, and a high-framed Touch-Free titanium butt guide that Shimano sized for PE 1 to 3. It’s also the only tier with a Carbon Shell grip, a hollow all-carbon section around the reel seat that Shimano says was a first for a surf rod. The blank mixes M40X and T1100G carbon, and Shimano puts the butt 9% thinner than the previous Limited’s 1010M+.

| S1010M+ | 10’10” (3.30 m) | 114.9 cm | 178 g | 12–45 g | 50 g | 0.8–2 | ¥106,000 (~A$930) |
| S116M+ | 11’6″ (3.50 m) | 121.8 cm | 188 g | 12–45 g | 50 g | 0.8–2 | ¥109,000 (~A$956) |

| S110MH+ | 11’0″ (3.35 m) | 116.8 cm | 182 g | 12–62 g | 68 g | 1–2.5 | ¥110,000 (~A$965) |
The light end is the Limited S108M: 10’8″, 176 g, plugs from 10 to 40 g and a C3000 to 4000 reel. Shimano describes it for small minnows and soft plastics worked with lift-and-fall, from river-mouth channels out to the drop-off of a shallow beach, which is a flathead brief. The Limited S116M+ is the long-cast model at 11’6″ and 188 g.
The weight gap to the cheaper tiers is small. The Limited S1010M+ is 178 g. The 2026 XR S1010M+ is 182 g and costs ¥46,500 less. What the extra money buys is the full titanium guide train and the Carbon Shell grip, both about how the rod feels through a cast and a retrieve, not what it weighs.
Shimano Nessa XTUNE
The 2025 XTUNE is built around toughness. Shimano’s pitch is staying power for anglers fishing more than 100 days a year, and the blank gets the same Spiral X Core and Hi-Power X as the Limited, with T1100G added for strength. Every guide on the XTUNE is titanium, with the Touch-Free titanium guide at the butt, and the grip is the same faceted carbon monocoque the Limited uses. There’s no Carbon Shell grip and no Aero or 3D titanium guides listed.

| S1010M+ | 10’10” (3.30 m) | 114.9 cm | 190 g | 12–45 g | 50 g | 0.8–2 | ¥75,000 (~A$658) |
| S110M/MH | 11’0″ (3.35 m) | 116.8 cm | 191 g | 12–54 g | 58 g | 0.8–2 | ¥76,000 (~A$667) |
| S108MH | 10’8″ (3.25 m) | 113.3 cm | 184 g | 12–58 g | 58 g | 0.8–2 | ¥75,000 (~A$658) |
| S110MH+ | 11’0″ (3.35 m) | 116.8 cm | 192 g | 12–62 g | 68 g | 1–2.5 | ¥77,000 (~A$675) |
That toughness shows on the scales: the XTUNE S1010M+ is 190 g, 12 g more than the Limited with the same code and 8 g more than the XR. The model worth importing for flathead is the XTUNE S100M, the shortest and lightest XTUNE at 10’0″ and 170 g. Shimano built it for quick response, with a reel seat length set for holding the rod under your arm, and lists harbour channels, steep beaches and river mouths, with jig-head soft plastics fished on a dart-and-fall. The XTUNE S110M/MH is the drifting model: Soft Tube Top for sinking pencils, an MH butt for bigger fish.
Nessa XR: The 2026 Middle Tier
The XR came out in August 2026 and Shimano markets it as the new standard of the range. Each of the five models has a job name on Shimano’s page, which makes this the easiest tier to shop: Accuracy, Standard, Drift, Jerking, and Drift & Power.

Shimano Nessa XR
At 165 g, the lightest Nessa in any tier is an XR: the XR S99M+, which is also the shortest at 9’9″. Shimano gave it the stiffer tip it first used on the XTUNE S100M, so lift-and-fall and short jerks come through to the lure, and it’s the XR to look at for flathead. The XR S1010M+ is the Standard model, and Shimano says it’s built on the same action as the Limited. Every XR blank has Spiral X Core, Hi-Power X and T1100G, the butt guide is the same Touch-Free titanium design used on the higher tiers, and the carbon monocoque grip has moved from a round shape to an edged one.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| S99M+ | 9’9″ (2.97 m) | 103.9 cm | 165 g | 12–45 g | 50 g | 0.8–2 | ¥58,000 (~A$509) |
| S1010M+ | 10’10” (3.30 m) | 114.9 cm | 182 g | 12–45 g | 50 g | 0.8–2 | ¥59,500 (~A$522) |
| S1010M/MH | 10’10” (3.30 m) | 114.9 cm | 185 g | 12–54 g | 58 g | 0.8–2 | ¥59,500 (~A$522) |
| S110MH/JERK | 11’0″ (3.35 m) | 116.6 cm | 192 g | 12–58 g | 58 g | 0.8–2 | ¥60,500 (~A$531) |
| S110M/MH+ | 11’0″ (3.35 m) | 116.6 cm | 195 g | 12–58 g | 68 g | 1–2.5 | ¥60,500 (~A$531) |
No XR is rated below 12 g, so a 10 g minnow is outside the rating on every model in this tier. If those light lures make up most of your box, the SS and BB start lower. The XR S1010M/MH is Shimano’s drift rod: the old 2021 XR’s 11-foot M/MH model cut down by two inches, with Soft Tube Top for sinking pencils swung through rip currents. The XR S110MH/JERK is a dedicated jerking rod for minnows ripped on slack line and short-pitch metal jigs.
Nessa SS and BB: Two Tiers Under ¥40,000
Shimano publishes a bend-curve comparison of these two on the SS page. In its words, the BB has a firmer tip suited to twitching and a belly that follows a steady retrieve. The SS tip follows low-resistance lures more closely and its belly is firmer for jerking. Under full load the BB’s thicker blank feels stronger on the cast and when you drag a fish up the sand. The SS has a wider release point and a softer, more forgiving bend in the fight.

Shimano Nessa SS
The 2024 SS is built on what Shimano calls a bending blank. The usual surf rod puts power in the blank and fires the lure out, which rewards a good caster. The SS is designed to load deeper so that the release point is easier to find, whether you cast with a long drop or a short overhead lob, and Shimano aims it at every level of angler, not just beginners. Every SS is rated down to 8 g, the lowest figure in the Nessa range, which the BB matches on its three lighter-powered models only.

| S104M | 10’4″ (3.15 m) | 110 cm | 177 g | 8–36 g | 42 g | 0.8–2 | ¥37,500 (~A$329) |
| S108M+ | 10’8″ (3.25 m) | 113.3 cm | 179 g | 8–42 g | 48 g | 0.8–2 | ¥39,000 (~A$342) |
| S112M+ | 11’2″ (3.40 m) | 118.3 cm | 190 g | 8–42 g | 48 g | 0.8–2 | ¥39,500 (~A$346) |
| S106M/MH | 10’6″ (3.20 m) | 111.6 cm | 182 g | 8–50 g | 56 g | 0.8–2 | ¥39,500 (~A$346) |
| S100M/MH+ | 10’0″ (3.05 m) | 106.6 cm | 175 g | 8–56 g | 65 g | 1–2.5 | ¥39,000 (~A$342) |
The SS S104M is 10’4″, 177 g and rated for 8 to 36 g. Shimano lists inner bays, steep beaches and harbour channels where the fish are close, and lift-and-fall work over changes in the bottom. The SS S106M/MH adds Soft Tube Top to an M/MH blank and is the cheapest drift rod in the range. The SS weighs almost the same as the BB: the S104M is 1 g heavier than the BB S104M, and the SS S108M+ and SS S112M+ are 6 g and 2 g lighter than their BB twins. The difference is in how the blank bends, not in weight.
Shimano Nessa BB
The BB is the cheapest Nessa at ¥27,200 to ¥29,600, and the oldest of the current tiers, from 2022. Shimano lists Hi-Power X on the main blank, CI4+ and stainless-frame K Guides, and the page names no Spiral X. The carbon content is 94.6 to 94.9% against 97 to 99% on every other tier. The BB page gives a reel, main line and leader for each model, which is handy if you’re putting an outfit together from scratch.

| S104M | 10’4″ (3.15 m) | 110 cm | 176 g | 8–36 g | 42 g | 0.8–2 | ¥27,200 (~A$239) |
| S108M+ | 10’8″ (3.25 m) | 113.3 cm | 185 g | 8–42 g | 48 g | 0.8–2 | ¥29,000 (~A$254) |
| S112M+ | 11’2″ (3.40 m) | 118.3 cm | 192 g | 8–42 g | 48 g | 0.8–2 | ¥29,600 (~A$260) |
| S106MH | 10’6″ (3.20 m) | 111.6 cm | 186 g | 10–50 g | 56 g | 0.8–2 | ¥29,600 (~A$260) |
| S100MH+ | 10’0″ (3.05 m) | 106.6 cm | 176 g | 10–56 g | 65 g | 1–2.5 | ¥29,000 (~A$254) |
For flathead, the BB S104M is the one. Shimano describes it for the 10 to 30 g metals, minnows and soft plastics used most often on a surf beach, with a tip and belly that bend smoothly into the cast. The two heaviest BBs are rated from 10 g, not 8 g, and the BB has no Soft Tube Top model, so drifting light sinking pencils is a job for the SS.
Comparison Table: Five Nessa Tiers
| Series | Year | Models | Blank | Butt guide | Weight | Lightest plug rating | JDM RRP (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shimano Nessa Limited | 2023 | 5 | Spiral X Core + Hi-Power X, M40X/T1100G | X Guide Touch-Free titanium (full X Guide) | 176–188 g | 10 g | ¥104,000–110,000 (~A$912–965) |
| Shimano Nessa XTUNE | 2025 | 5 | Spiral X Core + Hi-Power X, T1100G | X Guide Touch-Free titanium | 170–192 g | 10 g | ¥72,000–77,000 (~A$632–675) |

| Light model per tier | Length | Weight | Plug | Reel size | JDM RRP (excl. tax) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Limited S108M | 10’8″ | 176 g | 10–40 g | C3000–4000 | ¥104,000 (~A$912) |
| XTUNE S100M | 10’0″ | 170 g | 10–40 g | C3000–4000 | ¥72,000 (~A$632) |
| XR S99M+ | 9’9″ | 165 g | 12–45 g | Not stated | ¥58,000 (~A$509) |
| SS S104M | 10’4″ | 177 g | 8–36 g | Not stated | ¥37,500 (~A$329) |
| BB S104M | 10’4″ | 176 g | 8–36 g | C3000XG | ¥27,200 (~A$239) |
Read across the light models and the price falls faster than the weight does. The Limited S108M at ¥104,000 and the BB S104M at ¥27,200 are both 176 g. The XR S99M+ is the lightest of the five, but it’s also the only one that can’t go below 12 g.
Our Top Pick + Budget Pick
Top pick: Shimano Nessa XR S1010M+
¥59,500, about A$522. Shimano built it on the Limited’s action, it weighs 182 g against the Limited’s 178 g, and it costs ¥46,500 less. Rated for 12 to 45 g plugs and 50 g metals, it covers minnows for flathead and metals for salmon off the same beach. It’s the newest Nessa, from August 2026.
Budget pick: Shimano Nessa BB S104M
¥27,200, about A$239. The same 176 g as the lightest Limited, rated down to 8 g, and Shimano pairs it with a C3000XG reel and PE 1. For flathead in river mouths and on small beaches it does the job at a quarter of the Limited’s price.
Which Nessa for Which Beach?
- Flathead on soft plastics in river mouths and small beaches: the BB S104M or SS S104M, both rated from 8 g. With more budget, the XTUNE S100M adds titanium guides and a stiffer, quicker 10’0″ blank.
- Salmon and tailor on metals off open beaches: an M+ rod from 10’8″ to 11’2″, such as the BB S108M+, SS S112M+ or XR S1010M+. Shimano rates the BB and SS M+ models for metals up to 48 g. Jig choice is in our guide to light metal jigs for Australian salmon.
- Sinking pencils drifted through a rip: a Soft Tube Top model, cheapest in the SS S106M/MH, or the XR S1010M/MH if you want it lighter.
- Whiting on surface lures: not a Nessa job. Of the seven lures in our JDM whiting surface lure list, only the 8.5 g Sugapen 95F reaches the lowest Nessa rating. The rest need a rod rated for lures that light.
- Big fish off the beach: the MH+ models. Shimano mentions oonibe over a metre for the Limited S110MH+ and XTUNE S110MH+, and oonibe is Argyrosomus japonicus, the same species as our mulloway.
For lures to go with whichever rod you pick, our Japanese flathead lure picks covers the soft plastics and blades, and the shore jigging beginner’s guide is the place to start if casting metals from the beach is new to you.
